Dear JPO Supporter,

JPO UPDATE

There are a number of updates with regard to the JPO, and I hope this will answer the most common queries that people have been asking in recent weeks.

Symphony concerts – October –November 2014

We will not be presenting another full symphony season this year, but do have pleasure in advising you of three upcoming concerts to be held at the Linder Auditorium.

To our valued subscribers the first two concerts listed below will be offered at our regular subscriber rates if you wish attend both. i.e. Platinum – R450, Gold – R400,  Silver – R350, Bronze – R300, Pensioner – R250, Student – R120.

There will also be the regular Wednesday morning rehearsal for each of these concerts at 10h00 at R50 unreserved.

The first, to be held on Wednesday 29th & Thursday 30th October at 20h00 will feature the renowned pianist Andrei Pisarev performing the Chopin piano concertos. Andrei Pisarev is the past winner of the Rachmaninoff Piano Competition (Moscow 1983), the Grand Prize winner of the Mozart Competition (Salzburg 1991) and the UNISA Piano Competition (Pretoria 1992). Currently a Professor at the Moscow Conservatory, he is a performer not to be missed!

The second will take place on Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th November at 20h00 and is an Azerbaijan Celebration. As you are aware, the JPO travelled to Azerbaijan as the guests of the Azerbaijan Ministry of Arts & Tourism in July to perform at the Gabala International Music Festival – the relationship continues with the visit to our shores of conductor Yalchin Adygozelov and a soloist to perform in a concert hosted by the Azerbaijan Embassy in South Africa.

The third event will be a collaborative performance with the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra, celebrating their 80th anniversary, to be held on Saturday 15th November at 15h00. Ticket prices for this concert will be R200 for all seating and R100 for senior citizens and students/learners.

NLDTF Update

We have received the second tranche of the grant from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.

Although too late to mount a full season this year, we will open 2015 with a 4 week NLDTF Season in recognition of this support. Dates are likely to be 25th February to 19th March – at the Linder, and we look forward to welcoming you in the New Year.

Other Activities of the JPO - 2014

The orchestra will not be inactive during  this period – apart from the planned three concerts listed above, we have recently performed at a choral music competition hosted by the Mpumalanga Choral Association in Witbank, and have been chosen to perform at the finals of the competition in mid-October in Nelspruit.

Business Rescue

Although the JPO remains in Business Rescue, an appeal to creditors with regard to a compromise proposal is meeting with increasing support. Should the majority of creditors accept, a debt-free institution will be far more appealing to potential sponsors, and our efforts to ensure the long-term financial security of the orchestra can then be intensified.

Pinchas Zukerman Concert

The Pinchas Zukerman concerts were extremely well received and the net revenue from ticket sales exceeded R400K .

We advise that the fundraising appeal has resulted in the receipt of just over R500,000 to date.

We once again request those who have not yet made their contributions to do so as soon as possible - our targets remain R1m and we still persist with our requests to you until this target has been reached. These funds form part of a broader initiative to create a sustainable JPO for you to enjoy in the years ahead.
